27,500-Year-Old Teen Mauled by Bear Received Paleolithic Mourning Ritual
Around 27,500 years ago, a 15-year-old boy was fatally mauled by a bear at Arene Candide cave in Liguria, Italy, suffering severe injuries to his jaw, neck and left shoulder. Evidence from the site suggests he was not alone when he died and that his community performed mourning rituals. This is considered the oldest known evidence that Paleolithic humans grieved in ways comparable to modern humans.
