Baltic Sea cyanobacteria bloom arrived weeks early due to warming
Cyanobacteria bloomed in the Baltic Sea as early as mid-June this year, roughly a month ahead of their usual July schedule. Dr Justyna Kobos of the University of Gdańsk attributes the early bloom to higher-than-normal water temperatures driven by a warmer spring and summer. The earlier onset means a longer period of potential risk for swimmers along the Baltic coast.
