Google launched its screenless band with a redesigned, AI-powered app — but I hope Garmin doesn't follow suit

Garmin's long-rumored screenless smart band, designed to compete with the rising trend of 'focus wearables' such as the Google Fitbit Air and Whoop bands, is on the way. We initially thought it was the Garmin Index Sleep Monitor (pictured above), but that turned out to be a different product entirely.

The screenless fitness band is instead likely to be named the Garmin Cirqa, according to leaks; it's going to be a cool new deviation from Garmin's existing fitness watches list , and we now have more evidence that it's going to be launching soon.

Garmin has been filing trademarks for the name 'CIRQA' (styled in all caps, but we'll refer to it as Cirqa in text the same way we do Whoop, which is styled on its official branding as 'WHOOP'), with an entry to the US Patent and Trademark Office database spotted earlier this year.

However, Gadgets & Wearables have also found trademark filings for relevant governing bodies in Canada and the EU, adding fuel to the rumors that a launch may be imminent.

(Image credit: Future) All the filings connote a body-worn sensor rather than a communication device, suggesting the Cirqa isn't just a new smartwatch: it's exclusively for health and fitness.

This is quite exciting: at the moment, people looking for screenless, discreet wearables have no shortage of options, from the Oura Ring 5 to the Fitbit Air to last year's Polar Loop strap. Clearly, the category and people's interest are growing, and a top-quality device from Garmin would sell like hot cakes.

However, I hope Garmin doesn't repeat one aspect of Google's Fitbit Air launch. At the same time as the Fitbit Air came out, Google transformed the Fitbit app into Google Health, eliminating the last of its community features like shareable badges and challenges, controversially redesigning the app, and turning the Premium tier into an AI 'Health Coach' chatbot.

Garmin's user base would revolt if such dramatic changes came to the Garmin Connect app. There was widespread outrage last year when Garmin introduced a Premium tier with AI-powered features — the community is a passionate and outspoken one that loves its technology, and any hint that features are being scrapped or the app transforming to better conform to the AI-first nature of most screenless trackers would be met with an enormous outcry.

Garmin will have to make its Cirqa band work within its existing watch-focused ecosystem, unless it wants to launch a separate app or risk losing some frustrated customers.

Disney+’s imaginative anime anthology series, " Star Wars: Visions ", is getting a standalone expansion next month with "Star Wars: Visions Presents –The Ninth Jedi".

This 8-episode limited series is a continuation of the saga of Lah Kara, Margrave Juro, and their ragtag crew in the search for her kidnapped father. "Star Wars: Visions Presents – The Ninth Jedi" debuts on Disney+ on Aug. 5, 2026.

Fans were first introduced to the intriguing story in "Star Wars: Visions" Volume 1’s chapter titled "The Ninth Jedi", and now writer/director Kenji Kamiyama and his animation studio Production IG will revisit Kara’s world to elaborate more on the mythology behind lightsabers of different hues.

In the original 2021 episode, viewers met a bright Force-sensitive girl named Kara and her sabersmith father, Zhima, as they harvest Kyber Crystals to forge new lightsabers for Margrave Juro, the leader of an outer rim planet called Hy Izlan.

Juro is collecting worthy Jedi to help repopulate the Jedi Order, but evil Sith mercenaries are hiding within his candidates’ ranks. Kamiyama’s short initially presented the cool notion of lightsabers changing colors to reflect their users’ true links to the Force.

A direct sequel to Kamiyama's episode, "The Ninth Jedi: Child of Hope," was delivered by anime master Naoyoshi Shiotani and premiered on Oct. 29, 2025, for "Star Wars: Visions" Volume 3 . Lucasfilm's new show takes place shortly after the events seen in the two "Star Wars: Visions" shorts as Kara advances her training and searches for her father.

"We love the shorts, but Kathy [Kennedy] heard that, and there was a moment to say, 'Let’s see what could happen if we expanded this.' That’s really where 'Visions Presents' comes from. If we could give a bigger canvas to paint on, what would we get? We’ve been so impressed with what Kamiyama and his Production IG team has delivered so far."

A user on the Chinese forum Chiphell has found FSR Multi Frame Generation ratios of up to 8x hidden inside recent AMD drivers, using the RadeonTuner tool to access settings not yet exposed in the official AMD Adrenalin app. AMD's work on Multi Frame Gen was already hinted at earlier this year through references to "frame generation ratios" in ADLX API documentation. If released, the feature could dramatically boost frame rates for RDNA4 GPU owners beyond the 2x offered by standard frame generation.

If you're rockin' a current-gen AMD graphics card, there are yet more hints that multi frame gen (MFG), ie, frame gen that promises more than 2x frame rate, could soon be with us. 'Soon' is relative, of course, especially in the case of AMD, but detective work by a user on the Chinese forum Chiphell has revealed the presence of FSR MFG ratios up to 8x hidden in recent drivers (via Wccftech ).

The user discovered the setting in the RadeonTuner tool , which hooks into the official AMD driver and provides a different app on top. This app, crucially, can present things in the driver that the regular AMD Adrenalin app might not yet give you access to. Things such as the FSR ratio drop-down.

To be clear, we already knew that MFG was probably being worked on by AMD, because earlier this year there was mention of "frame generation ratios" in documentation for the ADLX API . This implied that game developers were now being allowed to tinker with frame generation ratios, which implies the existence of ratios above 2x. In other words: multi frame gen.

Now, we have more confirmation of this, and not only that, but (A) it's seemingly in the actual drivers rather than just SDK documentation, and (B) the ratio maxes out at 8x. For reference, Nvidia's Multi Frame Gen maxes out at 6x.

As someone who uses an AMD RX 9070 XT as my daily driver, I am keenly aware of just how long it's taken AMD to implement promised technologies that Nvidia has already long been able to deliver. Technologies, that is, like multi frame gen, not to mention the latest upscaling and frame gen technologies in general, in more than a smattering of games.

The RadeonTuner tool also seems to show FSR Ray Regeneration and Neural Radiance Caching overrides, which will presumably allow us to override a game's settings to force FSR ray reconstruction and neural caching for better ray tracing.

(Image credit: Future) I can't help but wonder, though, whether AMD users would rather more adoption of the latest FSR technologies we already have, such as regular 'Redstone' ML-powered frame gen and upscaling. There have been improvements on this front of late, though, with the technologies being allowed via driver-level overrides even for previous-gen AMD GPUs .

I also can't help but wonder how 8x frame gen will work in practice. I know for my part, I struggle to deal with the latency of even 3x or 4x frame gen on Nvidia cards. But I'm particularly sensitive to latency, so maybe 8x frame gen will have its place.

All good things must come to an end, and that's certainly the case with Lego sets retiring in 2026. Well over 100 kits are being taken to the farm this month, so it's your last chance to pick them up.

While models get shelved all the time (it's a necessity, because there's no way Lego could keep its cripplingly enormous back-catalog running at once), this month's cuts hurt; the Lego sets retiring in July feature modern classics like the Great Deku Tree, Optimus Prime, and the Talking Sorting Hat. More than a few of these are included on our list of the best Lego sets , so I'd definitely recommend grabbing them while you still can.

This is still my favorite gaming set thanks to its intricacy and nostalgic touches (as noted in my Lego Great Deku Tree review ), so seeing it go stings. It's already selling out, so if you find it out in the wild, don't hesitate!

This delightfully cheerful little guy is so full of personality despite being a bunch of bricks. It's the perfect desk buddy - or a great addition to your gaming setup. That's why I gave it a full five stars in my Lego Piranha Plant review , and it's also why I'm heartbroken to see it go.

Like we said in our Lego Gringotts Bank review , this is a masterclass in Lego engineering that shouldn't work – yet by the magic of Lego's design team, does. It's only available via Lego for now.

While there are other great kits going into retirement this month, I can't avoid a hat tip to the first D&D model. It's absolutely crammed with references to the game, and we may not get another one.

Why do Lego sets retire?

While there's no firm answer on why Lego retires sets, or when, a lot of it comes down to making way for new kits. The toy-maker produces countless models and adds new products to the lineup each month, so keeping them all running at once would be wildly impractical. As such, most sets have a time-limit of a few years before they get axed.

However, we can't discount popularity. It's possible that some sets retire early because they didn't connect with audiences, seeing as the opposite is also true: the most popular models get an extended lifespan. The UCS Millennium Falcon should have retired years ago, for instance, but it's still in production today.

There's also a possibility of rights issues. Because Lego deals with a lot of external licenses, it may need to retire sets when agreements come to an end.

When do Lego sets retire?

For the most part, Lego sets retire on one of two dates: July 31 or December 31. You may see kits retire at random times of the year, like June, but this isn't typical.
