In case you need a reminder that war is not just evil and destructive, but can also be just plain stupid, study this map. It shows how much territory changed hands after the Korean War, which lasted from 1950 to 1953 and claimed between 2.5 and 4 million lives.

Result: The border between North and South Korea changed from the straight red line to the squiggly white one. North Korea gained 3,900 km 2 (1,500 sq. mi) in the west, but lost 4,300 km 2 (1,660 sq mi) in the east. That’s a net win for South Korea of 400 km 2 (160 sq mi), an area about the size of Seattle or one-fourth of Greater London.

53 lives for each football field

Despite great initial advances, first by the North and then by the South, the front line settled near the original border between the two Koreas. Four million lives for 400 km 2 works out to one life per 100m 2 gained by South Korea. To translate that to American: 53 lives were lost for each area the size of a football field.

The squiggly white line is now known as the DMZ, short for “Demilitarized Zone.” It was originally meant to run along the 38th parallel, although that hasn’t been the case since the war retraced the border.

That initially straight border was first drawn on the night of August 10, 1945, when two young U.S. Army colonels were handed a National Geographic map of Korea and told to find a dividing line that would separate Soviet and American occupation zones. All they had was that map, 30 minutes, and a ruler. The officers — one of them, Dean Rusk, would later serve as Secretary of State under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson — chose the 38th parallel because it roughly split the peninsula in half and kept Seoul in the American zone.

Like their counterparts in post-war Germany, Korea’s communist and capitalist zones of occupation hardened into two separate and ideologically antagonistic states. Unlike the brawling between East and West Germany, the friction between North and South Korea lit the fuse of the Cold War’s first hot conflict.

MacArthur reverses the South’s flagging fortunes

Things came to a head in June 1950, when North Korean troops poured south across the 38th parallel. They advanced fast. By August, they had kettled the lightly armed South Koreans and a hastily assembled U.S.-led auxiliary force of the United Nations into a tiny perimeter around the southern port of Pusan. Under the brilliant leadership of U.S. General Douglas MacArthur, the UN forces managed an equally swift reversal of fortune, crossing the 38th parallel in pursuit of the retreating Northerners by October.

By November, MacArthur had reached the Yalu River on the border with China, which triggered a counterattack by hundreds of thousands of Chinese “volunteers”. UN forces once again retreated south, Seoul once again fell to the North, until the pendulum swung the other way once more. The UN pushed north again. By July 1951, the frontline eventually settled close to the current DMZ. Armistice negotiations took two years, during which time tens of thousands more lives were lost to intermittent fighting.

The bloody cost of taking, losing, and retaking terrain in Korea still distantly echoes in such half-remembered names as Heartbreak Ridge, Bloody Ridge, and Pork Chop Hill. As a bloody, pointless conflict essentially fought to a stalemate, the Korean War has been easily overshadowed by the Second World War, in which the U.S. was victorious. It would later be almost entirely erased from public memory by the ignominy of the Vietnam War, America’s most traumatic defeat.

The forgotten, never-ending war

Korea is the “Forgotten War,” which is darkly ironic because there was no formal peace treaty. Officially, it hasn’t ended yet.

If the Korean War has left an imprint on American culture, it is through M*A*S*H , Robert Altman’s 1970 film. Set in a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War, the film was obviously, transparently, unmistakably a commentary on the Vietnam War. It later spawned a popular TV show that ran from 1972 to 1983, lasting eight years longer than the war it depicted. The series finale was watched by 106 million Americans, the largest audience for a scripted TV event in U.S. history. (The most-watched TV event overall was the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969, with over 125 million viewers.)

Today, Korea itself remains divided by a zone that may be demilitarized, but only to separate two massive war machines. With the war technically still on, hair-trigger protocols mean incidents remain possible and vigilance necessary.

Serendipitously, the DMZ — a four-km (2.5-mi) wide strip of land untouched by either side for 70-plus years — has become one of the most biodiverse habitats in the world, home to an estimated 6,000 species, including more than 100 protected ones, such as the red-crowned crane, the Asiatic black bear, and the Amur leopard.

For nature, an unexpected sanctuary; for people, an unbridgeable chasm. The twice-accidental border (drawn and re-drawn haphazardly) separates a people that share a history, a language, a cuisine, and a genome into two societies that couldn’t be more different and are drifting ever further apart.

North Koreans are shorter and weigh less

North Korea is a totalitarian hereditary monarchy masquerading as a socialist republic, simultaneously operating a famine economy and a nuclear arsenal. South Korea is a liberal democracy that has risen from war-induced poverty to become the world’s 12th-largest economy and a global pop-cultural powerhouse. Due to differences in nutrition, the average North Korean adult is now about 7 cm (2.8 in) shorter and 9 kg (20 lb) lighter than their southern counterpart.

The DMZ is a reminder that borders are not a fact of nature; they are the result of force. It is also a stark reminder that the Korean War settled nothing. The peninsula is still divided. The war is not over. American soldiers are still stationed in the South, the North has gone nuclear, and the two sides still occasionally exchange fire.

War is stupid, but that’s a lesson that even 4 million dead, over just 400 km 2 of territory, struggle to get across.

In a pink-walled basement on Commercial Street, ScottCakes sells one item and nothing else: a golden butter cake under a swirl of pink vanilla buttercream. There are no rotating flavors, no seasonal specials, no coffee menu to round out the order. One cupcake, made one way, on purpose.

The single-minded devotion has an origin story to match. Scott Cunningham, a former actor and nanny, arrived in Provincetown in 2008 for a six-week theater engagement and stayed. He had baked these cupcakes for the children he once cared for, using a recipe adapted from a 1950s Better Homes & Gardens cookbook, and in 2009 he began selling them from a table on the street.

That’s when things got complicated. The town had granted Cunningham vending permits, then decided in 2010 they’d been issued in error — a zoning bylaw prohibited outdoor food sales. After a competitor complained, the building commissioner issued a cease-and-desist order, and police began ticketing him for selling cupcakes on the sidewalk. Rather than give up, Cunningham relocated his operation to the town’s former firehouse in partnership with the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod, donating a share of the proceeds. He contested the fines and prepared to take it to a jury trial. In January 2011, the district attorney’s office declined to prosecute and the town dropped the case. A few months later, he opened the permanent storefront that’s still there.

The shop runs seasonally, but the cupcakes ship year-round to people who, having had one, decided one flavor was plenty.

Across Europe, “tech sovereignty” is rising up the agenda. For business leaders, however, the implications are practical rather than political. At its core, sovereignty is about control, resilience and trust in the systems that underpin modern operations.

The European Commission’s recently announced technology sovereignty package reflects this shift. With proposals including the Chips Act 2.0, the Cloud and AI Development Act, an EU Open-Source Strategy and a Strategic Roadmap for Digitalisation and AI in Energy, it is intended to strengthen Europe’s digital independence and resilience.

That matters because IT infrastructure is now vital infrastructure. Cloud platforms, connectivity, AI systems and cyber security capabilities are becoming as essential to economic growth and national stability as energy and transport networks.

For years, digital transformation was driven by globalization, scale and efficiency, with organizations prioritizing rapid innovation, cost optimization and access to global technology ecosystems.

But cyber-attacks, regulatory divergence and geopolitical uncertainty have exposed a fundamental reality: efficiency without resilience creates fragility.

From efficiency to resilience

Today, organizations are focused not only on whether systems can withstand cyber-attacks, but whether they can keep operating if a provider, jurisdiction or supply chain becomes unavailable.

Protection and prevention remain essential. But resilience also depends on where systems are hosted, who controls critical infrastructure, how data moves across jurisdictions and whether essential services can be restored quickly during disruption.

Sovereignty is best understood as the ability to continue functioning with confidence when external conditions change. This is particularly relevant for organizations delivering critical services.

Why this matters for the UK

The UK faces many of the same pressures as Europe: rising cyber threats, tighter regulation and rapid AI adoption. But it also has real strengths, including a mature cyber security sector, world-leading professional services expertise, and a strong reputation for governance and innovation.

Those strengths give the UK a significant opportunity to position itself as a trusted partner for secure, resilient digital infrastructure. Realizing it, however, will require continued investment in infrastructure, skills and technology ecosystems.

The UK already has strong foundations. Within Vodafone Business, for example, security services for government and defense customers date back to 1989, underlining the long-term importance of trusted communications and secure operations.

Sovereignty must include AI

The sovereignty conversation is no longer limited to networks, cloud computing infrastructure or cyber security; it now extends to AI itself.

The UK government’s recent £400 million commitment to next-generation AI chips reinforces that ambition and signals a more deliberate push to build sovereign capability in the technologies that will underpin future competitiveness and resilience.

Government investment in sovereign computing capability and broader AI infrastructure also signals recognition that access to advanced computing resources is becoming a strategic national asset.

This matters because AI is rapidly becoming foundational infrastructure. Organizations are embedding it into business operations, cyber security programs, customer engagement and decision-making.

For businesses, sovereignty is not about limiting innovation. It is about ensuring critical capabilities can be developed, governed and accessed in ways that support long-term economic resilience and trust.

Connectivity as critical infrastructure

One of the most important and often overlooked aspects of sovereignty is connectivity. As organizations rely more on AI services, IoT devices and real-time data exchange, networks become the foundation of operational resilience.

If connectivity fails, everything built on it is affected, from customer services and supply chains to communications and core business operations.

That is why investment in secure, resilient, high-capacity networks is central to the sovereignty debate. Without trusted connectivity, digital sovereignty remains theoretical rather than practical.

The formation of VodafoneThree is a significant step in strengthening the UK’s digital backbone. With a commitment to invest £11 billion in next-generation connectivity and an ambition to deliver 99.96% population coverage by 2034, the UK is building infrastructure to support future growth and resilience.

This is particularly important for organizations delivering essential services. Today, 77% of UK Blue Light services already run on Vodafone Business networks, underlining the growing importance of trusted connectivity in critical operations.

A strategic moment for the UK

Europe’s emerging sovereignty agenda should not be mistaken for digital isolation. Rather, it reflects a growing recognition that interdependence must be understood, managed and secured.

For security leaders, that means broadening the conversation beyond traditional threat protection to include critical dependencies, digital supply chain resilience and operational continuity. Cyber security is increasingly part of a wider discipline of digital resilience, where security, connectivity, infrastructure and governance converge.

By combining cyber security expertise, growing sovereign AI capabilities, regulatory strengths and continued investment in connectivity, the UK has an opportunity to establish itself as Europe’s trusted security ally.

In the next phase of digital transformation, success will not belong only to those with the most advanced technology, but to those with the most trusted, resilient and transparent foundations.

The sovereignty economy is already taking shape. The question is whether the UK chooses simply to participate in it, or to help define it.
