Hennessey teases Project Overlord hypercar ahead of Monterey Car Week reveal

Hennessey’s Project Overlord will be its second lightweight, driver-focused hypercar.

Company founder John Hennessey has previously referred to it as an American Carrera GT.

A teaser shows a semi-circular taillight and a black mesh grille at the rear of the car.

In just a couple of weeks, Hennessey will no longer have just a single, mid-engined weapon in its line-up. In the lead-up to Monterey Car Week kicking off next month, the American firm has teased an all-new hypercar it refers to as ‘Project Overlord.’

Hennessey has been building and delivering the Venom F5 for several years now, most recently launching it in limited-run F5-M Roadster specification . While much of the hypercar space has been focused on this model, Hennessey has spent more than two years developing another hypercar to be sold alongside the F5.

This teaser previews the rear of the car, showcasing a semi-circular LED taillight neatly sandwiched between two areas of painted bodywork and positioned over a black mesh grille. It looks rather evil and seriously exciting.

Putting Drivers First

Little else is mentioned about the model in this teaser. A couple of years ago, John Hennessey spoke with CarBuzz about the model, referring to it as a “lightweight, high-revving, driver-engaged car” that the firm has long wanted to add to its line-up. Like the F5, it will be built and engineered entirely in-house and not based on any existing performance car. In a separate interview, Hennessey referred to Project Overlord as the American successor to the iconic Porsche Carrera GT.

It remains a mystery what kind of performance targets Hennessey has in mind for this new model. If it’s slightly smaller and lighter than the Venom F5 , perhaps with a simpler powertrain and possibly a manual gearbox offering, it may end up like an American alternative to a Lamborghini Temerario or McLaren 765LT. Admittedly, given Hennessey’s smaller production footprint than those brands, expect fewer to be built, and each to cost in excess of seven figures.

Whatever form Project Overlord ends up taking, we don’t have to wait long to find out, as Hennessey will lift the veil on it on August 3. Hypercar buyers, get your bank accounts ready.
