Japan records first-ever official "kokushobi" days with temperatures above 40°C
Japan has been struck by a deadly heatwave and for the first time officially recorded days classified as "kokushobi" — meaning "cruelly hot days". The category, introduced in April, applies to days when the maximum temperature reaches at least 40°C. The milestone marks a new chapter in Japan's meteorological records and underscores the intensifying impact of climate change in the region.
