Australian whistleblower David McBride released on parole after 27 months
David McBride, the former army lawyer jailed for leaking secret defence documents about Australia's involvement in the Afghanistan war, has been released from Canberra prison on parole. He was sentenced in May 2024 to a maximum of five years and eight months, but was freed after serving his full non-parole period of 27 months. The attorney general approved his release; McBride's leaks to the media exposed allegations of war crimes by Australian soldiers.
