Is aging a biological program, not just inevitable decay?

Researchers are increasingly taking seriously the hypothesis that aging is a programmed biological process rather than the inevitable result of molecular decay, including the degradation of proteins and DNA. While the outward signs of aging are well known, the underlying biology remains contested. New lines of research suggest the body may actively regulate the aging process.
