737 fake VPN extensions on Chrome Store hijacked users' traffic

Socket's Threat Research Team identified 737 fake VPN and proxy extensions across at least 40 Chrome Web Store developer accounts, collectively amassing over 75,000 installs. More than 270 impersonate 66 trusted brands, including NordVPN and Proton VPN, while routing users' entire browser sessions through proxies controlled by a single operator. The extensions targeted mostly Russian-speaking users seeking free privacy tools. Many remain live in the store, so users should audit their installed extensions.
