Russia in West Africa: better at protecting allies than fighting jihadists

Russian armed forces were deployed to Niger to support the fight against Islamist insurgents, but their main role amounts to military protection of the ruling junta. Analysts assess that Russians are more effective as bodyguards to those in power than as a force fighting jihadists.
