Scientists created eight-letter genetic alphabet: RNA reads it
Researchers from UC San Diego showed that a key cellular enzyme — RNA polymerase — can accurately read eight letters of the genetic code, while all known life is based on four. Detailed imaging showed that the enzyme handles synthetic DNA letters similarly to natural ones. The discovery brings scientists closer to creating expanded genetic systems capable of performing entirely new biological functions.
