Wrocław Polytechnic: gut bacteria produce proteins like Alzheimer's

Researchers at Wrocław Polytechnic showed that bacteria present in the human gut can produce amyloid proteins strikingly similar to those responsible for Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. In Alzheimer's, deposits are formed by beta-amyloid 1-42 peptide and tau protein; in Parkinson's, alpha-synuclein. The discovery sheds new light on possible mechanisms of neurodegenerative disease development.
