Ukrainian steel nearly vanishes from EU market under new climate rules
Ukrainian steel exports to the EU nearly dried up in Q1 2025 following the entry into force of EU climate regulations, specifically the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Ukrainian steelmakers fear permanent exclusion from the European market. Mirosław Motyka, head of the Polish Steel Industry Chamber, says the EU understands Ukraine's exceptional circumstances but that common climate rules apply to all.
