France declares 12 July Alfred Dreyfus Day to mark republic's antisemitic scandal
From 2025, France marks 12 July as Alfred Dreyfus Day, the anniversary of his rehabilitation after years of wrongful conviction for espionage. The national date commemorates the antisemitic hysteria of the late 19th century, the prioritising of army loyalty over truth, and a state that defended its own lie for years. The new commemoration falls two days before Bastille Day.
