US coronary artery disease deaths fell by over half since 1990, but 89% remain preventable

A study published in JAMA Cardiology found that deaths from ischemic heart disease in the US fell by more than half between 1990 and 2023, driven largely by reductions in smoking (down 33.3%) and particulate air pollution (down 74.9%). However, in the final year of the study, 419,000 of the estimated 473,000 coronary artery disease deaths — 88.8% — were still linked to modifiable risk factors. Researchers say that better management of those factors could prevent almost nine in ten deaths.

League of Legends Classic players criticise modern skins appearing in retro game mode

Riot Games has officially revealed League of Legends Classic, a game mode recreating the experience of the MOBA's early seasons. However, some players are already raising concerns about the inclusion of modern champion skins, calling into question how faithful the mode truly is to the original game. The mode blends key moments from the early seasons rather than being an exact replica.

China tests coast guard patrols and submarine-launched ICBM as long-term deterrents

In June, China deployed coast guard vessels to patrol the Pacific Ocean east of Taiwan and weeks later test-fired a submarine-launched ballistic missile from the South China Sea. Analysts say both moves represent new, long-term strategies to deter U.S. allies from challenging China's territorial claims rather than one-off shows of force. The coast guard formation, positioned 100 km from Taiwan, is seen as police activity but analysts warn it may become a permanent fixture of Chinese pressure on the island.
