France ratifies Caribbean border with the Netherlands — 377 years after it was drawn

France's National Assembly approved a bill ratifying a 2023 agreement that formally puts into law the border between French Saint-Martin and Dutch Sint Maarten on the Caribbean island of Saint Martin. The border has existed since 1648, when France and the Netherlands agreed to divide the island, but has only now been given full legal status. Residents on both sides cross freely daily despite living under different customs, immigration and tax regimes.
