Japanese scientists search for dark matter in a decade of geomagnetic readings from Scotland

A Japanese research team has searched for dark matter not with a new instrument, but by analysing ten years of geomagnetic readings already recorded at a quiet observatory in Dumfriesshire, Scotland. Their theory holds that dark matter should leave a faint signal in the natural resonating cavity between the ground and the ionosphere, which rings at around 8 Hz. The approach uses Earth's own magnetic field as a detector — far larger than any man-made instrument.
