Putin watched navy drills off Sakhalin Island before heading to disputed Kuril Islands

Russian President Vladimir Putin observed naval exercises off Sakhalin Island on Thursday before travelling to the disputed Kuril Islands. The visit prompted a strong protest from Japan, which also claims sovereignty over the islands. The Kuril Islands have long been a source of diplomatic tension between Russia and Japan.
