Putin visits Kuril Islands for the first time — Japan lodges sharp protest

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Etorofu island in the disputed Kuril Islands for the first time. Japan's foreign ministry lodged a strong protest, as Tokyo considers the islands part of its territory, seized by the Soviet Union.
